Gantry cranes are typically used in outdoor applications or below an existing overhead bridge crane system. Unlike a bridge crane, a gantry crane does not need to be tied into a building’s support structure. This means that there is no need for permanent runway beams or support columns. On a double girder gantry system, two beams make up the bridge. The double girder components are more complex, making them more expensive than a single girder crane. These are recommended for heavy-duty applications where the crane has to lift at a heavier capacity and for longer timeframes.
